Properly Pack Items to Put in a Storage Unit

There are many reasons why someone would choose to rent a San Francisco storage unit. When you’re renovating, storing your furniture keeps it out of your way while remaining safe and out of the elements. It also comes in handy if you inherit furniture you don’t have room for, for general storage space. Depending on what you’re storing, and how long it will be in storage for, you will need to pack up appropriately. Here are some tips to keep your belongings in top condition while they’re in storage.

Quality Materials

No matter what you are packing up, it is important that you use quality materials. Use new plastic tarps when wrapping up large pieces of furniture, to ensure that there are no holes or tears. While you can reuse cardboard boxes, they should be clean and intact. Even a small amount of damage, such as a rip or crushed corner, could lead to the box falling apart. If you plan to pack your items in plastic bins, make sure that there are no cracks or signs of stress, as this could lead to the deterioration of the bin.

Keep It Light

When packing up, do not overpack your boxes. This will make them harder to move, harder to search through, and more prone to breaking or falling apart. If you are tempted to fill each box until it’s full, use smaller boxes to prevent this from happening.

Stay Organized

Whether you are packing books, paper, or fabric scraps, it’s important that you clearly mark each box that you pack up. Pack similar items together, and mark exactly what is in each box. Be sure to mark each side of the box, so it’s easily found when the boxes are stacked on top of each other. For the ultra-organized, record what items are going into your San Francisco storage unit and where in the unit they can be found. Keep this list with you to help you easily find what you’re looking for.
